Understanding NDIS continence funding
A plain-language overview of how the NDIS funds continence assessments, products and ongoing nursing supports — and what to ask for at your next plan review.
Where continence supports sit in your plan
Continence supports are usually funded under one of two budgets:
- Core – Daily Activities (Nursing) for ongoing nursing tasks, in-home product changes and clinical reviews.
- Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living (Therapeutic Supports) for assessments, training and reports prepared by a registered nurse or allied health professional.
Some participants also have Consumables funding for continence products such as pads, pull-ups, catheters and skin-care items.
What an assessment funds
A nurse-led continence assessment typically covers:
- A clinical interview about bladder, bowel and skin patterns.
- A review of current products, equipment and routines.
- Goal-setting aligned to your NDIS plan.
- A written report you can submit at plan review.
The report explains the recommended supports in language the NDIA and your support coordinator can act on.
How to ask for what you need
If you suspect your current plan does not cover the supports you need, raise it with your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator before your next review. Bring:
- A recent assessment report (less than 12 months old where possible).
- A short list of goals — for example, "fewer skin breakdowns", "confidence to attend community activities", or "less reliance on family for overnight changes".
- Quotes from preferred providers if you already have a service in mind.
When to request an unscheduled plan review
Unscheduled reviews are appropriate when your circumstances have changed significantly — for example a new diagnosis, hospital discharge, or a change in living arrangements. Your assessor can write a supporting letter.
