Suprapubic catheter changes at home: what to expect
A plain-language guide to having a suprapubic catheter changed at home by a registered nurse — how often, how to prepare, and when to call for help.
What a suprapubic catheter is
A suprapubic catheter (SPC) drains urine through a small opening in the lower tummy, just above the pubic bone, instead of through the urethra. Many people find it more comfortable and easier to manage long term than a urethral catheter.
How often it needs changing
Most long-term catheters are changed every 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the catheter type, the manufacturer's guidance and your doctor's or urologist's instructions. Your first change after the catheter is placed is usually done in hospital or by the specialist team.
What happens during a home visit
- The nurse checks your details, current catheter and any recent concerns.
- Hands are washed and a clean (aseptic) field is set up.
- The balloon is deflated and the old catheter removed.
- The new catheter is inserted, the balloon inflated and drainage confirmed.
- The site is checked for redness, discharge or overgranulation and the change is recorded.
A routine change usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
How to prepare
- Have your prescribed replacement catheter, drainage bags and any sterile water or gel ready.
- Keep your discharge letter or specialist instructions nearby (catheter size and balloon volume).
- Drink normally beforehand so drainage can be checked.
- Let us know about any allergies, recent infections or blockages.
